Electrical stimulation therapy (E-stim or electrotherapy) involves the use of low levels of controlled electrical currents to stimulate specific nerves, muscles, or tissues in order to achieve therapeutic effects. This technique is commonly used to provide pain relief, reduce stiffness and inflammation, improve muscle strength and function, promote tissue healing, and address certain neurological conditions.
A machine that generates and controls the electrical current is attached to electrodes which are then placed at the treatment site on your pet.
There are different types of electrical stimulation therapy used in pets:
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS): This form of electrotherapy primarily aims to provide pain relief.
Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES): NMES is used to treat muscular weakness and improve muscle function.
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (pEMF): This technique uses electromagnetic fields to generate electrical currents within tissues. pEMF influences cell activity, promoting tissue repair and reducing inflammation, making it particularly useful for accelerating healing in musculoskeletal injuries.
Is electric stimulation therapy safe?
When performed by a trained therapist, electric stimulation therapy is safe and effective for your pet.

The duration for each session may vary according to the specific condition being treated.
The treatment time can be adjusted based on the animal's tolerance and the therapeutic goals.
The electrical impulses generated by TENS interfere with pain signals, leading to a reduction in pain. It can also trigger the release of endorphins, which are natural painkillers. This will help in alleviating pain and discomfort in your pet and is helpful in managing chronic pain conditions.
Promotes blood flow to the treated area which helps in tissue healing and reducing inflammation.
When an electrical current is applied to a targeted muscle group, it causes the muscles to contract and relax rhythmically, which helps improve muscle strength. This is especially useful for preventing muscle atrophy (loss of muscle mass) in pets that are immobilized due to injury, surgery, or neurological conditions.
In pets with certain neurological disorders or paralysis, electrical stimulation can help activate nerve pathways and improve neuromuscular coordination. By stimulating the nerves responsible for muscle movement, pets may regain some functional movement and coordination.
Chronic pain conditions such as osteoarthritis
Weakened or atrophied muscles due to disuse, injury or neurological conditions
Neurological conditions or injuries such as spinal cord injuries or nerve damage
Post surgical recovery
Muscle spasms and tension
Tendon and ligament injuries
