EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

WHAT IS EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment option that utilizes high-energy sound waves to treat and manage various musculoskeletal conditions in our furry friends. Using a shockwave generator, a probe is applied to the skin over the affected area directly. The shockwaves are then generated and delivered to the tissues through the applicator.

The shockwaves stimulate the body’s natural healing process by releasing proteins that help speed up the healing of damaged tissues. This leads to the growth of new blood vessels in the treated area, which improves blood supply and promotes tissue regeneration in tendons, joints, and bones. The exact number, intensity, and frequency of shockwave pulses vary depending on the specific condition and treatment goals.

Is ESWT Safe?

When performed by a trained therapist, shockwave therapy is safe and effective for animals. It has been used to treat various musculoskeletal conditions in both large and small animals.

How long does each session of ESWT last?

FAQ

5 - 15 Minutes

The duration of a shockwave therapy session for animals can vary depending on several factors, including the specific condition being treated, the size of the treatment area, and the individual animal's response to the therapy.

How does ESWT work?

Pain-relieving effect

Stimulates sensory nerve fibers, reducing pain perception in the treated area. This can provide relief for animals suffering from chronic pain conditions.

Neovascularization

Promotes growth of new blood vessels (neovascularization) in the affected area, enhances tissue oxygenation, nutrient supply and waste removal; overall, supporting the healing process.

Regulation of cytokines

Cytokines are small proteins that play a role in inflammation and the immune response. ESWT is thought to regulate the production and release of cytokines, helping to reduce inflammation and pain.

Stimulation of cellular activity

Stimulates cellular activity and metabolism which promotes the production of collagen and facilitates tissue regeneration.

What conditions can be treated with ESWT?

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Hip dysplasia

  • Elbow dysplasia

  • Chronic spinal issues – relief of muscle pain due to spondylosis, intervertebral disk disease, and lumbosacral instability

  • Osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD)

  • Tendon and ligament injuries

  • Fractures (delayed-healing or non-union)

  • Cruciate ligament injury

  • Cauda equina syndrome

  • Muscle treatment (trigger points, muscle tension)

Are there any side effects?

Skin redness or bruising: Occassionally, your pet may experience some skin redness and bruising at the treatment site. Fret not, as this is typically mild and would resolve on its own without the need to intervene.

Does my pet need to be sedated for ESWT?

With advancements in technology, the newer models of ESWT machines, including ours, have significantly improved the treatment experience for pets. In the past, with older ESWT machines, pets often required sedation as the treatments were painful. However, thanks to the progress in the field, our modern ESWT machines are now well-tolerated and non-painful for our furry friends. As a result, there is no need for anesthesia or sedation during the procedure, making it a more comfortable and stress-free experience for the animals.
